The Top Six Natural Strategies to Help Your Back Pain

Dr. Joseph McMahon

Hey there, folks! Have you ever experienced that annoying ache in your lower back? It's a common problem that many people face. The good news is there are things you can do to help relieve that pesky low back pain. One option you might not have considered is seeing a chiropractor for low back pain. Let's explore six natural helpful strategies to tackle your back pain, including how a chiropractor can lend a helping hand.

1. Get a Chiropractor

Now, let's talk about seeing a chiropractor for low back pain. Chiropractors are professionals who specialize in the spine and musculoskeletal system. They use their hands to make adjustments to your spine, aiming to improve your alignment and reduce pain. Many people find relief from their low back pain after visiting a chiropractor.

Chiropractors can perform spinal adjustments, which involve applying controlled force to specific areas of your spine. This can help relieve pressure on nerves and reduce pain. Additionally, adjunctive therapies like scraping, stretching, and massage can also be used at appointments. A chiropractor will frequently also provide advice on exercises and stretches to do at home to support your recovery.

2. Try Acupuncture

New Acupuncture is another option worth exploring for low back pain relief. In acupuncture, tiny needles are inserted into your body, which stimulate circulation. Is acupuncture good for low back pain? Research says yes! If you're curious about acupuncture, be sure to consult with a qualified acupuncturist who can guide you through the process and discuss whether it's a suitable option for your low back pain.

3. Good Posture Matters

How you sit and stand can impact your back pain. Make sure to sit up straight and keep your feet flat on the ground when you're sitting. When standing, distribute your weight evenly on both feet. If you work at a desk, consider an ergonomic chair to support your back.

4. Heat and Ice

Using heat and ice can be like magic for your back. When your back is sore, apply a heating pad for 15-20 minutes. It helps relax the muscles. If your back is swollen, switch to an ice pack for 15-20 minutes to reduce inflammation. Remember not to put ice or heat directly on your skin; wrap it in a cloth.

5. Stretch It Out

Stretching can work wonders for your back pain. Simple stretches like the cat-cow, where you arch your back like a cat and then flatten it like a cow, can provide relief. Yoga and Pilates are great for flexibility and core strength, which can help your back feel better. Stretching helps your muscles stay loose and lessens tension.

6. Stay Active

You might be tempted to lie down when your back hurts, but gentle exercises can help! Activities like walking and swimming can strengthen your back muscles and reduce pain. Just make sure to start slowly and gradually increase the intensity.

In conclusion, low back pain can be a real pain in the...well, back!

There are several ways to find relief. Stretching, staying active, maintaining good posture, and using heat and ice can all help. And if you need that additional support, see a chiropractor for your low back pain. They might just be the missing piece to help you get back to feeling your best. Don't hesitate to reach out to our chiropractors to discuss your options and find the best solution for your unique needs. Your back will thank you!

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis , results from repetitive strain on the elbow. Tennis elbow is a medical condition that can affect anyone regardless of their profession or involvement in sports. It is also known as lateral epicondylitis because of the development of tendonitis of the forearm muscles of the lateral epicondyle. The symptoms of tennis elbow can include discomfort and pain on the lateral epicondyle , stiffness, weakness, and difficulty performing simple tasks like gripping and lifting objects. These symptoms can become chronic if left untreated and lead to degenerative changes in the tendons and bones around the elbow joint.

Chronic low back pain can be both debilitating and difficult to manage. As a consequence, chronic low back sufferers can be forced to take sick leave and even miss out on some of life’s most memorable moments. Unfortunately, we are a society that doesn’t automatically provide opportunities for core strength, movement, and appropriate rest. As an example, our hunter gatherer ancestors moved a lot, they did sit - or squat - and keeping a strong body was just a way of life. While this is the environment that we adapted to, modern life asks us to find unique and new models for keeping our backs healthy and functional. At our office, it is not uncommon for patients to utilize an integrative care system while treating low back pain. As a consequence, we see better outcomes for these patients. But what exactly is an integrative care system. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes integrative care as a coordinated care between conventional and complementary treatments. This might sound vague at first but let’s break it down a bit. Complementary treatments would include treatments like acupuncture , deep tissue laser , or chiropractic adjustments . Conventional care might include rehabilitative exercises, over the counter medications, steroid injections, or surgery. Integrative care ties both sides of these healthcare teams together in a coordinated way. At our office we have chiropractors and acupuncturists working side by side coordinating the complementary care. Equally important, we also routinely work with patients to help build the very best medical teams. As a result, we see better patient outcomes from even the very severe cases. In the end, integrative care is a win-win for everyone involved. However, working with a team of healthcare providers can be expensive. Surprisingly, there are several ways integrative care is more affordable at our office. We have affordable discounted rates for self pay patients or those working with multiple providers in our office. There are also packages available for some of our services to help reduce the cost. Our clinicians are also preferred providers with some of the major health insurance companies. Also, we do accept HSA and FSA cards (and can provide superbills for accurate accounting). If you are considering becoming a patient for chronic low back pain, schedule a new patient appointment today and we will evaluate your case.
