Can a Chiropractor Help My Tension Headaches?

Dr. Joe McMahon

Do you ever get headaches that feel like a tight band around your head? These headaches are often called tension headaches, and they can be really uncomfortable. But did you know that a chiropractor might be able to help with them? In this article, we'll explore how a chiropractor can assist in relieving tension headaches.

What Are Tension Headaches?

Before we dive into how a chiropractor can help, let's understand what tension headaches are. Tension headaches are a common type of headache that many people experience. They often feel like a constant pressure or tightness around your head, as if a rubber band is squeezing it. These headaches can last for hours or even days, making it hard to concentrate on work or fun.

Why Do Tension Headaches Happen?

Tension headaches can be caused by different things, like stress, poor posture, or muscle tension. When the muscles in your neck and upper back get tight, they can put pressure on your nerves and blood vessels. This pressure can lead to a headache.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who specialize in treating problems with your spine and nervous system. They use a hands-on approach to make adjustments to your spine, which can help improve the function of your nervous system. So, how can this help with tension headaches?

1.
Relieving Muscle Tension: Chiropractors can use gentle techniques to relax the muscles in your neck and upper back. By doing this, they can reduce the tension that might be causing your headaches.

2.
Improving Posture: If your posture is not quite right, it can put extra strain on your neck and back muscles, leading to tension headaches. Chiropractors can provide advice on improving your posture and making adjustments to your spine to help you maintain better posture.

3.
Reducing Stress: Sometimes, stress is a big factor in tension headaches. Chiropractors can't magically make your stress disappear, but they can help your body handle stress better by improving your nervous system function.

4.
Preventing Future Headaches: Chiropractors can teach you exercises and stretches that can help you keep your muscles relaxed and prevent tension headaches from coming back.

What to Expect When Visiting a Chiropractor

When you visit a chiropractor for tension headaches, they will first ask you questions about your headache history and perform a physical exam. They may also take X-rays to get a better look at your spine. After understanding your condition, they will develop a personalized treatment plan.

Chiropractic adjustments are typically painless and involve the chiropractor using their hands or a specialized tool to gently manipulate your spine. Many people find these adjustments to be quite relaxing.

What About Acupuncture for Tension Headaches?

In addition to chiropractic care, another alternative therapy that some people explore for tension headaches is acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that involves inserting thin needles into the body. Some studies suggest that acupuncture may help reduce the frequency and intensity of tension headaches by promoting relaxation and improving blood flow. While the research on acupuncture for tension headaches is ongoing, some people find it to be a helpful complementary therapy. If you're interested in acupuncture, make sure to consult with a qualified acupuncturist to see if it might be a suitable option for you.

In Conclusion

While chiropractors may not be able to completely cure tension headaches, they can be a helpful part of your healthcare team in managing and reducing the frequency and intensity of these headaches. Remember that it's essential to consult with your parents and a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, including chiropractic care. Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis , results from repetitive strain on the elbow. Tennis elbow is a medical condition that can affect anyone regardless of their profession or involvement in sports. It is also known as lateral epicondylitis because of the development of tendonitis of the forearm muscles of the lateral epicondyle. The symptoms of tennis elbow can include discomfort and pain on the lateral epicondyle , stiffness, weakness, and difficulty performing simple tasks like gripping and lifting objects. These symptoms can become chronic if left untreated and lead to degenerative changes in the tendons and bones around the elbow joint.

Chronic low back pain can be both debilitating and difficult to manage. As a consequence, chronic low back sufferers can be forced to take sick leave and even miss out on some of life’s most memorable moments. Unfortunately, we are a society that doesn’t automatically provide opportunities for core strength, movement, and appropriate rest. As an example, our hunter gatherer ancestors moved a lot, they did sit - or squat - and keeping a strong body was just a way of life. While this is the environment that we adapted to, modern life asks us to find unique and new models for keeping our backs healthy and functional. At our office, it is not uncommon for patients to utilize an integrative care system while treating low back pain. As a consequence, we see better outcomes for these patients. But what exactly is an integrative care system. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes integrative care as a coordinated care between conventional and complementary treatments. This might sound vague at first but let’s break it down a bit. Complementary treatments would include treatments like acupuncture , deep tissue laser , or chiropractic adjustments . Conventional care might include rehabilitative exercises, over the counter medications, steroid injections, or surgery. Integrative care ties both sides of these healthcare teams together in a coordinated way. At our office we have chiropractors and acupuncturists working side by side coordinating the complementary care. Equally important, we also routinely work with patients to help build the very best medical teams. As a result, we see better patient outcomes from even the very severe cases. In the end, integrative care is a win-win for everyone involved. However, working with a team of healthcare providers can be expensive. Surprisingly, there are several ways integrative care is more affordable at our office. We have affordable discounted rates for self pay patients or those working with multiple providers in our office. There are also packages available for some of our services to help reduce the cost. Our clinicians are also preferred providers with some of the major health insurance companies. Also, we do accept HSA and FSA cards (and can provide superbills for accurate accounting). If you are considering becoming a patient for chronic low back pain, schedule a new patient appointment today and we will evaluate your case.
